Betaine, also referred to as trimethylglycine, is an important molecule used in methylation reaction in the body. It works along with folic acid, vitamin B12, choline and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) in a variety of biochemical processes. In particular it assist with liver functions and has been shown to benefit people different forms of liver disease.
Betaine-HCl is commonly used to assist digestion in people with low stomach acid (i.e. Hypochlorhydria). Aside: The betaine molecule itself has little affect on digestion but the supplement form is a salt with hydrochloric acid (HCl). Therefor the betaine helps to carry the HCl into the body and release it in the lumen of the stomach to aid protein digestion.
