What Is It?
The term 'vitamin' as applied to vitamin D is inaccurate, as the standard definition of a vitamin is that it must be consumed orally. Vitamin D, in contrast, is synthesized by the skin following exposure to ultraviolet rays from sunlight. The most prevalent form of vitamin D found in plants is called ergocalciferol or simply vitamin D2. Cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3 on the other hand, is formed when ultraviolet light reacts with cholesterol, and this is the form of vitamin D used by the body. AOR's Vitamin D3 is naturally and ethically sourced from sheep wool oil collected during shearing.
What Does It Do?
Primary Uses: Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is primarily known to boost mood, especially during winter months when our skin gets little exposure to the sun. A vitamin D deficiency is related to S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder). However, Vitamin D's commercial and scientific popularity is approaching that of vitamin C, and many people use it during cold and flu season to help prevent infection or as a daily supplement for general health.
Secondary Uses: Vitamin D is also vital to bone growth since it supports calcium absorption. Vitamin D deficiency results in rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, both of which are characterized by inadequate bone mineralization. More recently, vitamin D has been found to have protective effects against auto-immunity and several age-related diseases.
Who Should Take It?
Vitamin D3 is good for everyone, especially those who spend most of their time indoors or who have been diagnosed with a genetic mutation that prevents their body from synthesizing vitamin D3. Up to 1000 IU's is considered safe for people of all ages from infants to seniors.
