This species improves immune function, helps to calm digestive upsets, assists other species of bacterium, as well as improves the absorption of nutrients and lipids in the gut. It antagonizes pathogens such as rotavirus, staphylococcus aureus and clostridium difficile. Lactobacillus paracasei has been safely used to treat diarrhea in infants.
