What is Lutein? Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids naturally present in the lens and macula of the human retina. They are strong antioxidants and prevent oxidation and photo damage in the structures of the eye. The eyes are particularly vulnerable to free radicals and both the lens and the retina are extremely fragile and need to be protected. Lowering the oxidative stress affecting the macula may help prevent age related macular degeneration.
The greatest eye health benefits associated with nourishment come from foods high in lutein. Lutein and zeaxanthin are stereoisomers (mirror images) and the only carotenoids (natural plant pigment) found in the eyes. Of foods containing lutein, Kale contains the most.
Seeing is Believing Although we all value our vision, few of us realize how frequent eye problems become later in life. Indeed, it is estimated that 1.2 million Canadians older than 40 have early signs of age related macular degeneration. It is a common problem that affects approximately 80% of people 75 years or older and only one in 10 patients will have their vision saved. It is a devastating disease for which little can be done. Cataracts are another very common eye condition. They are present in more than 50% of persons 65-74 year old and 65% of those over the age of 75. Every year, in the US, 1.3 million operations are conducted to remove cataracts for a total of 3 billion dollars.
Different From Other Eye Health Antioxidants Lutein's protective effect on the eyes is threefold. The antioxidant filters out blue light, which damages the macula over time, it protects the vasculature of the macular region and it prevents the oxidation of the fatty acids in the phosphoreceptor membrane. These effects are not seen with other antioxidants such as vitamin A, lycopene, alpha and beta-carotene and vitamin E.
Damaging Light,Cataracts & Macular Degeneration The development of lens opacities such as the formation of cataracts is due to changes in the proteins that make up the lens fiber. The protein damage is related to exposure to UV light. The presence of antioxidants in the lens of the eye reduces oxidation and damage incurred to proteins through photo-oxidation. Lutein reduces the incidence of cataract formation and macular degenerationand slows their development.
Better Absorption The efficiency of absorption of both lutein and zeaxanthin seems to be greater than that of beta-carotene. Lutein and zeaxanthin are absorbed better if taken with lipids, as they are absorbed with fats. Lutein is very safe and adverse reactions have not been reported.
Lutein for the Macula Epidemiological studies established a strong correlation between lack of carotenoids in the diet and age related macular degeneration.Diets containing at least 6 mg of lutein per day reduced the incidence of age related macular degeneration by 43%, and lutein levels were 40% lower in people affected by age related macular degeneration.
Lutein is not only good at preventing macular degeneration; it is also a good treatment early in the disease process. Patients taking a 10 mg/day of supplemental lutein had increased pigmentation in the macular region. They also had significant improvement in ocular function tests, such as: glare recovery, contrast sensitivity, and visual acuity. Diminution of age related macular degeneration and cataract formation were seen with supplementation. Healthy adults receiving lutein/zeaxanthin supplements over six months had an average increase of 39% in the density of macular pigments, and these increases were significantly associated with decreased glare disability and photostress recovery times.
Lutein for the Lens On an epidemiological level, those found to have the greatest intake of lutein had a 22% decreased risk of undergoing cataract surgery. Cataract formation in people consuming lutein from spinach was 50% lower.
Photoprotection & Cancer Lutein has been shown to have anti-carcinogenic properties. Studies have shown that lutein and zeaxanthin suppress cell division of breast cancer cells, and lutein has been linked to immune enhancement in animal studies. Carotenoids also have a strong protective effect against breast and skin cancer. It is thought that lutein protects the skin against UV light oxidative stress. This benefit was not found with other antioxidants.
Cholesterol Benefits In vitro studies have confirmed that lutein lessens LDL-induced plaque formation.
