What Is It?
Taurine is an unconventional and conditionally essential amino acid due to its unique chemical structure, which has a sulfur base as opposed to carbon base. Taurine is the second most prolific amino acid found in the body and helps to stabilize cell membranes. The most recent population studies have referred to taurine as a “wonder molecule” responsible for the longevity benefits of the Japanese.
What Does It Do?Primary Uses: Taurine is the most abundant amino acid in the heart, and is important for cardiovascular function. It helps to regulate blood pressure, heart rhythm and has been used to help with various types of cardiovascular problems. Taurine is often used to improve exercise performance due to its involvement in cardiac function and energy storage.Secondary Uses: Taurine is able to cross the blood brain barrier, and may have potential in helping to deal with neurological disorders. In clinical settings, taurine has been used to help protect the brain from over-excitation. Analysis of human brain tissue showed that over two-thirds of the samples of migraine/epileptic patients had reduced taurine content. It may also protect against degenerative brain diseases. Taurine supplements are also used to lower levels of blood glucose and reduce the necessity for insulin therapy in those with hyperglycemia.
